Since last fall a few units have had mice, which is unusual for Canal Place. The source of the problem is the construction in the adjacent building which is displacing the mice and they are taking up residence in Canal Place.
Here’s what the management suggests: “To prevent mice entering your unit we recommend that you seal all wall openings, particularly those under your kitchen and bathroom sinks and in the laundry room, where the pipes come thru the wall. An easy way to do that is with a spray can of “Great Stuff”. It sprays on like whipped cream and quickly dries hard like Styrofoam. This will prevent any mice in the walls from getting into your unit. We also suggest that you place traps in those same locations. Cans of “Great Stuff” are available in hardware stores, Home Depot, Lowes and similar stores.”
As the weather warms up, one hopes that any mice will relocate outside, and that the construction to the rear of the building will be much further along and properly battened up before next fall.
The back elevator transformer needs to be replaced. The part needs to be ordered and the freight elevator will be out of service for the rest of the weekend and probably for a period of time on Monday.
Please be patient.
Thank you!
Also, it’s worth mentioning that the problem with too many lights coming on in the front elevator is still under investigation. It appears to stem from a combination of issues involving the aging local power grid and our not-so-new elevator. Possible solutions are being explored.
As of 6:00 tomorrow morning, there is no parking allowed in the surface lot. Please move your car to one of the city garages before then. Here’s the official announcement.
Just a heads up: I’m told that the front door phone directory is not working and that management has been notified. If you’re expecting anyone, it would be good to make sure they have both your apartment number and your phone number. (I’m not clear as to whether it’s just the directory or the whole system that’s iffy)
Also, for those who haven’t seen this notice posted around the building either, the passenger elevator will be out of service on Wednesday for repairs. Hopefully, this will mean no more “scenic route” elevator rides with stops on every floor!
For those of you who haven’t noticed the signs posted around the building, the basement garage door is being replaced on Tuesday and cars must be out by 8:30 AM or they will be stuck in the garage for the day:
I’m told that the power outage that didn’t happen last night is now scheduled to occur between 11pm Thursday night and 5am Friday morning. (Many thanks to those who forwarded me info; I don’t seem to be on the National Grid call list for some reason.)
Just a heads up that there may be a planned power outage between 11pm Tuesday night and 5am Wednesday morning to do some underground repairs. I didn’t receive notification myself but had the info passed along to me by a neighbor who did get a call. I couldn’t find any further information online; the closest I came was this FAQ page. If anyone else knows more, please post in the comments.
In the meantime, I need to check the battery backup in my alarm clock!
Here we go again. Cars need to be out of the surface lot by tomorrow morning as per the building snow storm parking rules or they risk being towed. There is free parking available to city residents during the snow emergency but, unfortunately, not at the Roy Garage next door. Click here for a larger view of the Police Department announcement.
A parking ban officially starts at 5:00am tomorrow morning, so unless you’re planning to be up that early in the morning to move your car out of the surface lot tomorrow, you should probably move it tonight. Here’s the police department statement. The statement doesn’t give an end time for the ban but the Snow Emergency itself officially ends at 8:00pm tomorrow; the parking ban may, or may not, last somewhat longer.
