Lock Your Car! (& free bubble wrap)

A reminder to folks to make sure not to leave valuables in their cars and to keep their vehicles locked. The Lowell Police regularly report that the most common kind of theft they see involves people simply walking down the street or through a parking lot trying door handles, and when they find a car unlocked they go through it and take what they can.

Also, for anyone who might be moving, or needs to pack fragile items for whatever reason, I have two shopping bags full of bubble wrap that I’d like to see reused rather than tossed. Just let me know if you’re interested and I’ll hand them over. (Update: bubble wrap has been claimed and is no longer available.)

Carpet Cleaning

An owner is requesting advice. If you have any suggestions, please put them in the comments.

I’m looking for a carpet cleaning company that’s not afraid of coming into our building.

I’ve tried a few and I’ve been told that mill buildings in downtown Lowell are very difficult to work in, and that I’d need a company with portable equipment.

If you have worked with a company recently that you were happy with, and they were able to supply the portable equipment to get to our upper level floors, please let me know who they are so that I can give them a call and try and get them to come and do my carpets.

Your help is much appreciated.

Gardening Saturday

A message from Sally:

We will be tilling the soil tomorrow in the 3 islands around the parking lot where we put flower beds each year if anyone wants to join us from 9 am to noon. Wear garden gloves and bring water.
The following week from 9am to noon we will be planting the 45 flats of
begonias. Helpers welcome.

Planting Help Wanted May 13th & 20th

Still looking for volunteers to help put in those flowers that will brighten our lot all summer long. Please contact Sally Coulter if you can pitch in on either day. This has been a one-man project for years; with him unavailable this year, it’s time for the rest of us to step in. Not to mention it’s a fun way to get to know your neighbors better!

Sally Coulter and Betsy Chisholm will be leading the charge. Volunteers need no special skills. On Saturday, May 13th, the plan is to loosen the soil and add compost. On the following Saturday, the 20th, forty-five flats of begonias will be planted on the usual three islands. Hours are 9:00am until finished. If you have hand spades, shovels and/or work gloves, please bring them.

Again, please let Sally know which days you can help, what equipment you can bring, and how to reach you if plans change at the last minute (a cell phone number would be good). Thanks!

Greek Line Dancing

A couple of people in the building caught me line dancing at a festival last year and have asked if I could hold an informal lesson for residents sometime before Lowell’s Greek festival season starts in June. As a rule, I’d rather dance myself than teach, but I’m game to give it a shot if there’s interest. Here’s what I’m thinking:

  • Location for lesson: Probably the little park out front with the nice pathways, especially since the Board just recently expressed a reluctance to deal with requests to use the atrium or other common areas in the midst of everything else they’re juggling at the moment. Other location suggestions are welcome.
  • When: Probably the end of May or the beginning of June. Exactly what day, date, and time depends on the weather and what’s convenient for the interested parties.
  • The dances being taught would most likely be:
    • Kalamatianos—This is an absolute favorite, and will turn up at just about any event where there’s a Greek band, including at restaurants and general festivals.
    • A basic Tsamiko—Don’t be scared off by what you see on YouTube if you search for this dance. The simplest version of a Tsamiko can be done by anyone who can count to four, dancer or not.
    • Cost: Free!!

If such an event would interest you, please let me know in the comments, and please include any thoughts or suggestions about a convenient day, time, and place.
