Window Replacement

A resident is wondering if anyone has had their windows replaced, and if so, is this a big undertaking? And who did you use?

I know there are plenty of people who’ve had windows replaced, and my own unit is going to need new ones at some point, so if anyone would like to post in the comments about their experience and who they used, it would be much appreciated.

In the meantime, the question of window replacement has come up before, although mostly about companies used and not the actual process. Here’s an old post from two years ago.

  1. Yes, I have. This is Julie in Unit 508. I don’t have the company name in front of me, but I’ll look for it.

  2. I’ve used Riverside Glass twice. Once for a 2BR and once for a 1BR. I was satsified with the work. City Mirror and Glass also does the work, but I’m told they are more expensive. Worth getting a quote, though.

  3. We used Riverside this past spring and had a great experience. They were cheaper than City Mirror and the customer service was far superior. We live in a corner unit so we had more windows to replace but still only took approx 6 hours to complete. They will need a place to work in the condo and window areas cleared. They removed blinds and replaced once completed.

  4. Jim W. adds this via e-mail:
“I strongly recommend Riverside Glass. The contact is John Finnegan. The number is 978-454-7171. I had a very positive experience with them.
I had a bad experience with City Mirror and do NOT recommend them.”

John Drake posted a reply on the older comment so I’m copying it here also:
“I have always used Riverside glass. They are on Appleton street right here in Lowell. They do great work. I’m thinking about having mine replaced. If enough of us get together we could get a reduced rate. I think that is an option we should consider.”

  5. And another comment via e-mail, this one from Henry P:
“I had a window replaced a couple of years ago. It was
Done by City Glass on Lincoln St in Lowell. They did a
very good job. The only problem is that you have to remove
the wooden valance at the top to access the window.”

I’m wondering if something’s a bit different on the first floor (we’re on the 4th) since I’m not sure what wooden valence he means.

But it’s great to see so many replies on the subject of windows! Thank you everyone!

  6. Cliff here from unit 403. First time posting here. Thanks for all the first hand experiences. Dawn/others if you’re looking at installing windows before this winter, let’s talk. Sounds like we may have a couple folks that could grant a discount for all. Windows here basically drop like a guillotine down to the first floor when opened and it’d be really great to get any signs of medieval torture windows out of the unit.

Also, is the wooden valance maybe the larger wooden board that appears to be the only thing holding up the small section of the wooden floor by the windows? Definitely seen that here in 403.

    1. Hi Cliff. I’m really surprised to hear that your upstairs windows drop down like that. Ours take a fair amount of effort to open OR close. I’d be curious to know if anyone else’s windows do that. Also, I’ve recently been told that the windows themselves are never replaced; it’s actually the glass in them that gets redone, so I’m not sure what it would take to fix what you’re describing. You might shoot Cathy an e-mail and ask about that one.
