Has anyone had an expanded loft put in in the past few years? One of our neighbors is looking for a contractor with experience in doing this sort of work in this building.
For anyone who’s interested, Twirling Jennies: A History of Social Dance in the City of Spindles 1820–1920 is out and available on Amazon. UMass Lowell is planning to carry it in their bookstore. The Visitor’s Center is considering carrying it but no decision yet. I also have several copies I’m happy to sell to neighbors at below list (list is $28.95) for $20 each. And I promise not to put any more pitches for it in future posts except, perhaps, to remind people near Christmas that it would make a great gift!
Just a reminder, if you’re having problems with your AC, you need to contact Cathy Deloge (royal.cathy@comcast.net or 978-521-9995) to get it fixed. Since people were chiming in with problems after that last post, I passed it along to Cathy and she’s looking into it.
But I do sympathize with wanting input from your neighbors first–just like when I used to look out the window of my old house to see if my neighbors had power when mine went out!
Our AC is working fine (it’s 3:00 on Sunday) but there’s at least one person with AC problems today. He’d like to know if anyone else has noticed any issues or if it’s just his unit. Comments welcome!
August was a quiet month…no Bulletin Board posts at all! Just a couple of things now:

If you haven’t noticed, the canal worker fountain on the corner of Shattuck has been repaired. The fellow is once again wielding a pry bar instead of a cudgel. Yippee!
Saturday is the next-to-last of this summer’s increasingly popular Lowell Walks. They meet at the Visitor’s Center at 10:00 and last 90 minutes. This week’s topic is Trains & Trolleys in Lowell. For anyone who wants to mark their calendar, the next Board Meeting is at 7:00 on Monday, the 21st. At some point, I hope to put info about the Board, its schedule, its current members, and some of its workings on the website; I just haven’t gotten to it yet. But maybe soon—I have a bit more free time now that my Lowell book has finally gone to press (it should be out the 15th: www.twirlingjennies.com).
Due to a scheduling conflict, there will be no lobby office hours tomorrow. If you have an important matter or a package to pick up, you can text Chris today (Friday) to make arrangements. And lastly, the news you’re all really looking for, the latest on the fountain from Cathy:
The panels were dropped off to the body shop. They will complete the prep and painting.
The malfunction with the fountain leaking , on the pump side of the fountain is repaired. ( Parts replaced.) It has been working flawlessly since yesterday.
The plywood was secured to the brick. A lot of them were not secured to the brick.
The black rails that make up the circle were installed today along with securing the pads to the plywood. They never had a cure for this problem. The pads just flopped around. Now they are stable and secure.
Once these metal panels are back from the body shop Ron will complete this project up by reconnecting the ground wires to the metal panels, and reinstall the newly painted black bars that ties them altogether. It will take a day to install these. That should complete the job.
For those who haven’t noticed tents sprouting like mushrooms all around us, it’s Folk Festival Weekend again—my very favorite time of year!
I have no intention of driving anywhere for the next few days, but for those of you who do—or who have friends coming over—here’s the scoop on road closures.
For those who haven’t seen the notices on the bulletin boards around the building, there will be work being done on the air conditioning this Tuesday and Wednesday. The management is asking that you turn your AC off between the hours of 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM on those days.
Needless to say, there will be people who don’t. My understanding is that the work can be done more efficiently if as many people as possible remember to shut down their heat pumps. It also saves you from paying for electricity to run your pumps when the AC is offline and you’re not really cooling your unit.
The board is looking for your feedback on recent, and possible future, smoking policy changes at Canal Place One. They are asking that residents and owners take a look at info gleaned from an earlier survey done by our attorney partners, Perkins & Anctil, and then take a 3 question survey to provide input and feedback.

This is not an official vote on the Smoking Policy. The board is simply looking to gain a broader perspective on both possible policy changes and current legislative trends to limit/ban smoking.
The survey will be open until July 31st and the results will be discussed at the monthly board meeting on August 3rd.
