Thermostat Info Request

Question from resident:

Can anyone tell me if they have installed Nest thermostats on their heatpump systems here in Canal Place and whether or not they are happy with them? I’m thinking about installing but would like to speak to someone with hands-on experience.

  1. I have not, but when I had an electrician over to help me fix the old thermostat (the ones with mercury etc), his opinion was that they were far too expensive to be worth it, in terms of cost and installation and maintenance.

  2. I’m sure they would work fine. I saw those but the price is high. I’ve installed Lux thermostats and they work well. In terms of total electric consumption, I find my water heater to be a big draw.

  3. I installed two of them. There is a catch. It requires connecting the 24 VAC in the heat pump to a unused wire that goes to the thermostat. Otherwise it would wear the batteries down.

  4. Also, I’ve found them to definitely save money. There are two cost points . The fancy one which costs a lot more and tells you the weather. And the less expensive one that has all the features to save money without the outside temperature information.

Plus they have a nice phone app for remote access from anywhere on the planet.

  5. I just bought one – thank you to everyone posting about theirs.

The Mass Saves program sells subsidized smart thermostats to most Massachusetts residents. Worth checking out if you’re interested but feeling some sticker shock.
